The Autonomous Region of Madeira marked World Oceans Day by reaffirming its commitment to marine conservation and sustainable development, highlighting that over 81 per cent of its maritime area is protected. This achievement places the Region amongst the most protected marine areas in Europe and reflects a strategy based on the preservation of biodiversity, the sustainable management of marine resources and the promotion of the ocean as a natural heritage. <\/p>\n\n
The protection of the marine ecosystem is complemented by investment in scientific research, environmental monitoring and public awareness-raising, as well as by the implementation of conservation programmes involving public bodies, the scientific community and citizens. These initiatives help to strengthen the resilience of marine ecosystems and promote the responsible use of ocean resources. <\/p>\n\n
Madeira thus reaffirms its commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, in particular SDG 14 \u2013 Life Below Water, by promoting a development model that reconciles ocean conservation, adaptation to climate change and the sustainable growth of the blue economy.<\/p>\n\n
