67 Madeiran Tourist Establishments Honoured with the ‘Green Key’ Award

On July 5th, the ‘Green Key’ awards ceremony was held at the Pestana Casino Hotel, honouring 67 Madeiran tourist establishments for their good environmental practices.
The Green Key programme promotes sustainable tourism, recognising establishments that implement good environmental and social practices, and value environmental management and Environmental Education for Sustainability. Madeira stood out in this event by winning 67 awards in 2024, compared to 1 award in 2007, making it a regional record. During the pandemic years, the number of award winners fell, but the sector’s resilience allowed it to recover. In the 2024 edition, 68 applications were submitted, with only one not being approved. The programme is coordinated by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) and, in Portugal, by ABAAE, with the Regional Directorate for the Environment and Climate Action being the regional coordinator in Madeira.
