Sessions with Sign Language Interpretation at the ABM
This summer, the Madeira Archives and Library (ABM) will hold three storytelling sessions with Portuguese Sign Language (LGP) interpretation, on 27 July, 10 and 24 August, at 11:00 am. The sessions are free and aimed at children up to the age of 12, with the presence of interpreters from the Deafblind Support Division of the Regional Education Department(DRE). This initiative, part of the children’s programme of the Regional Directorate of the Madeira Archives and Library (DRABM), aims to promote interaction between deaf and hearing children and encourage a love of reading. Since it began in March, the project has endeavoured to make the ABM’s services more accessible to deaf children and to encourage the active participation of the deaf community. Eduardo Jesus, Regional Secretary for the Economy, Tourism and Culture, emphasises the importance of including sign language in ABM’s activities.
