Mega-clean-up campaign in Porto Santo removes 70 tonnes of waste

To celebrate the 4th anniversary of the classification of Porto Santo Island as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, a mega clean-up and environmental awareness campaign was held between 28 and 30 October.

The “Porto Santo + Clean” initiative mobilised around 200 volunteers, including local bodies and the community, promoting the correct disposal of waste. During the campaign, almost 70 tonnes of monos, monstros and green waste were collected, demonstrating the need for greater environmental awareness.

Despite the positive impact, new irregular dumps quickly emerged, highlighting the importance of an ongoing commitment to sustainability and good environmental practices.

The island of Porto Santo was recognised by UNESCO on 28 October 2020, reinforcing the need to preserve its natural heritage and promote sustainable development.
