Madeira outlines roadmap to fulfil goals by 2050

Madeira has defined an ambitious strategic plan with the aim of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, thus aligning itself with European and national goals in the fight against climate change. The Carbon Neutrality Roadmap for the Autonomous Region of Madeira (RNC-RAM) was designed based on a detailed analysis of the main sources of greenhouse gas emissions, covering sectors such as energy, transport, agriculture, forestry, industry and waste.

The initiative aims to reduce emissions of polluting gases and simultaneously strengthen carbon sequestration capacity, promoting sustainable development in the region. The roadmap included the definition of technical, economic and environmental scenarios, accompanied by the investments needed to realise them.

During the presentation, Eduardo Jesus, Regional Secretary for Tourism, Environment and Culture, emphasised that carbon neutrality is no longer an option but a strategic necessity for Madeira’s future. He highlighted projects that have already been implemented, such as ‘Decarbonise RAM’ and the Calheta hydroelectric plant, as examples of the regional commitment in this area.

The plan was supported by the European Union under the INTERREG MAC 2021-2027 programme and the PLANCLIMAC2 project, with 85% funding. The next phase involved launching a tender to hire specialised technical services, as well as holding public consultations and workshops.

Manuel Ara Oliveira, regional director for the Environment and Climate Change, emphasised the importance of involving civil society in this process and highlighted the role of natural and innovative solutions to reduce emissions and increase the region’s resilience.

The RNC-RAM was defined as a strategic opportunity to transform Madeira into a cleaner, more efficient and competitive territory, in line with the new regional and global economy, with direct gains for the environment and people’s quality of life.
