Art that challenges thinking

As part of the Câmara de Lobos municipality festivities, Teatro Metaphora presented the artistic installation “Metanoia”, a work that challenges critical thinking and promotes personal, social and environmental awareness. Inspired by the Rubik’s cube, the installation uses giant cubes made of recycled cardboard, a humble, reusable and accessible material, which here takes on a new life as a vehicle for artistic and social transformation.

The choice of cardboard is not only functional but also symbolic: it represents the fragility of the world we live in and, at the same time, the possibility of reconfiguration and change. Just as the Rubik’s cube can be reorganised, societies also face the need to reinvent themselves in the face of the environmental and social crises we are experiencing.

The installation was designed to provoke a ‘positive discomfort’ in the public, a pause that invites reflection. The aim is to question each person about their individual and collective role: how can we reorganise the ‘block’ that is our life and contribute to a more sustainable and just future?

According to its creators, “Metanoia” emphasises the importance of awareness and action, because it is not enough to recognise environmental problems; it is necessary to act. This artistic project, by incorporating reused materials, concretely embodies a practice of circular economy , demonstrating that even discarded elements can be creatively reused and generate a positive impact.

. In line with the ongoing work of Teatro Metaphora, which has been prominent in environmental and social education initiatives, “Metanoia” reinforces the idea that art is a powerful tool for raising awareness. More than just decorating the urban space, the installation invites the community and visitors to reflect on small everyday choices that, when added together, can lead to big changes.

Thus, through art, Câmara de Lobos is transformed into a stage for ecological awareness, where sustainability and creative expression meet. The project demonstrates that change is possible, but it requires commitment, awareness, and collective action—a true call for environmental and social responsibility.
