Environment Week 2025 was held in Praça do Município under the slogan ‘One Earth, our power, our planet’

From 2 to 7 June, Funchal hosted another edition of Environment Week, organised by the city council, with most of the activities taking place in the Praça do Município. The event aimed to raise awareness among the population to the protection of ecosystems and promote local environmental action, reinforcing the city’s commitment to environmental, social, economic and cultural sustainability.

Throughout the week, each day was dedicated to a specific theme of the Environment Department, starting with Climate Change, moving on to water management, gardens and green spaces, animal causes, biodiversity and ending with the valorisation of Funchal’s Ecological Park.

More than a thousand students from schools, institutions and municipal gyms took part in various educational and recreational activities, such as gardening workshops, recycling workshops, laboratory experiments, theatre plays, fun games and tree climbing and sensory routes.

Also noteworthy were the science initiatives promoted by the Natural History Museum and the Marine Biology Station, and the awareness-raising activity on the Aedes aegypti mosquito. During the event, two children’s books dedicated to climate action and the wastewater cycle were presented.

New public facilities were also inaugurated, such as the Dog Park Promenade in Lido and a natural shade pergola in Ponta Gorda. At the closing ceremony, prizes and certificates were awarded to institutions and schools that had taken part in environmental actions promoted by the municipality throughout the school year.

Environment Week 2025 thus reinforced the importance of uniting the community around environmental defence and the adoption of good sustainable practices in everyday life.
