Region strengthens its commitment to organic farming
The Autonomous Region of Madeira has been strengthening its commitment with organic farming, in line with the growing demand for sustainable practices and healthier products. Since 2015, with the implementation of the Strategic Plan for Organic Farming, the number of certified producers has increased by 66 per cent, from 110 to 183, and the certified area has almost doubled, from 146 to 291.7 hectares.
This growth has been supported by financial incentives, free technical assistance and specialised training. Between 2021 and 2023, 59 investment projects were developed and almost a thousand technical support actions were carried out for producers. Fruit-growing leads the favourites, followed by horticulture and banana-growing.
The Regional Government also emphasises the role of the Organic Farming Market, created in 2007, as a direct outlet for producers. In addition, support for organic production under PEPAC-Madeira includes annual aid of between 500 and 1,440 euros per hectare.
The Region is committed to continue to promote the growth of organic farming, consolidating it as a fundamental pillar of Madeira’s environmental resilience and rural economy.
