Regional Directorate of Tourism donates decorative tarpaulins to social institutions in the context of sustainability
As part of Environment Week and in line with the process of certifying the Autonomous Region of Madeira as a Sustainable Tourist Destination, the Regional Directorate for Tourism (DRT) has donated several tarpaulins, previously used in the themed decorations for the Carnival Festivities and the Flower Festival 2024, to various educational and social institutions.
After consulting various interested entities, the tarpaulins were donated to the Madeira Archives and Library, Dr. Horácio Bento Gouveia School, Madeira Social Inclusion Centre, Água de Pena Community Center and Clube Desportivo Garachico. These tarpaulins will be reused by the institutions for various purposes, helping to reduce waste and promoting the reuse of these materials, giving them a new life.
The Regional Director for Tourism, Dra. Dorita Mendonça, highlighted the importance of this action, saying that “the reuse of tarpaulins is a significant step towards reducing the environmental impact of tourist events and promoting sustainability in our region”. This initiative not only supports the beneficiary organisations, but also reinforces the Regional Government’s commitment to implement good practices and on environmental and social responsibility.
This measure is part of DRT’s wider strategy to promote sustainability and environmental awareness in all its activities, in line with global sustainable development goals.
