Funchal recognised as ‘Bluest Municipality’ for the second year running
Funchal has once again been honoured as the ‘Bluest Municipality’ in Madeira, an award given by the European Blue Flag Association (ABAAE) and the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA). For the second year running, the city has been recognised for its work in environmental education and the sustainable management of natural resources.
The award reflects Funchal City Council’s (CMF) strategy of promoting sustainability and strengthening environmental protection. In 2023, the municipality carried out 11 environmental education activities, excelling in preserving marine ecosystems and raising public awareness.
With the theme ‘Restoring Nature’ chosen for 2025, Funchal is already preparing new projects focussed on restoring natural habitats and promoting biodiversity. The programme of activities was supported by Frente MarFunchal, Clube Naval do Funchal and other partner institutions.
