Quinhentista Market values traditional trades
Machico hosted another edition of the 16th Century Market (“Mercado Quinhentista”) on 6, 7 and 8 June, an event that this year paid tribute to traditional trades under the theme ‘Knowledge in the Hands’ (“O Saber nas Mãos”). The event once again established itself as one of Madeira’s main cultural events, attracting thousands of visitors over the three days.
The initiative saw the participation of 76 entities, including 52 groups and projects, which enlivened the city’s different spaces with a diverse programme. Among the various activities were historical re-enactments, the sale of handicrafts, typical gastronomy, musical and dance performances, traditional games and various interactive activities. The event also included more than 1,400 extras, who brought to life parades and scenic moments inspired by the 16th century.
During the presentation ceremony and throughout the event, various personalities emphasised the importance of valuing traditional knowledge and preserving Madeira’s collective identity. Ricardo Franco, mayor of Machico, emphasised that this initiative ‘represents the spirit of the people of Machico, their culture, their history, their resilience and their ability to make things happen.’
The 16th Century Market also reinforced the educational and heritage component, with activities designed for schools and families, promoting the transmission of ancient knowledge to new generations. The organisation considered this edition a success, both in terms of community involvement and public support, consolidating the event as a cultural reference in the region.
