Madeira may bring forward its renewable energy target

The Autonomous Region of Madeira may bring forward its target of achieving 55 per cent renewable energy penetration – initially set for 2030 – after recording a rate of 56 per cent in the first quarter of 2026. This result reflects ongoing investment in diversifying renewable energy sources and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

In recent years, the Regional Government and the Madeira Electricity Company (EEM) have invested over 250 million euros in the energy transition, supplemented by around 120 million euros from the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), earmarked for the construction of hydroelectric power stations and the expansion of wind and solar capacity. In Porto Santo, renewable energy production is expected to rise to around 70 per cent later this year, consolidating the island’s position as a European leader in sustainable energy solutions.

These developments reinforce the Region’s commitment to decarbonisation, energy security and the promotion of a more sustainable energy model, balancing increased renewable energy production with the reliability of the electricity system and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
