The ROTATES project aims to promote traditional crops

The ROTATES project, developed by the University of Madeira through ISOPlexis – Centre for Sustainable Agriculture and Food Technology, in partnership with the Regional Directorate for Agriculture and Rural Development, aims to promote the region’s traditional agricultural crops, with a particular focus on yams. The initiative seeks to strengthen the preservation of agricultural biodiversity by promoting innovation and sustainability in the primary sector.

The project involves the development of certified seeds, the identification of varieties best suited to Madeira’s soil and climate conditions, and the conduct of trials at the Santana Experimental Field. These actions seek to increase the resilience of crops, improve the competitiveness of regional production and contribute to more sustainable food systems that are less dependent on imports.

The initiative forms part of a broader strategy for investment in research, innovation and knowledge transfer for regional agriculture, promoting the promotion of local products, adaptation to climate change and the sustainable development of Madeira’s agricultural sector.
