Funchal installs new ashtrays at bus stops to curb pollution from cigarette butts

Funchal City Council has begun installing new ashtrays at bus stops across the city, as part of a measure aimed at reducing the littering of cigarette butts in public spaces and mitigating the environmental impacts associated with this type of waste. The initiative aims to raise awareness amongst smokers about the correct disposal of cigarette butts, thereby promoting cleaner and more sustainable urban spaces.

Cigarette butts are one of the most commonly found types of litter in urban areas and represent a significant source of pollution, as they can release toxic substances into the environment and affect terrestrial and marine ecosystems. The installation of these facilities forms part of a municipal strategy to strengthen sustainable waste management and promote environmentally responsible behaviour.

The initiative will be extended to other areas of the city, helping to improve the quality of public spaces and reduce the environmental footprint associated with the improper disposal of waste, in line with the Municipality of Funchal’s sustainability and environmental awareness objectives.
