Green energy production reaches 55% and breaks a record
Energy production from renewable sources in Madeira reached a record high of 55% in the first quarter of 2026, representing the best result ever recorded in the region. This performance was driven primarily by an increase in hydroelectric production, boosted by favourable weather conditions and investments made in recent years in sustainable energy infrastructure.
Between January and March, hydroelectric power accounted for the largest share of renewable production, followed by wind power, contributing significantly to reducing dependence on fossil fuels. According to the data released, the commitment to clean energy has reduced the need to rely on imported fuels, strengthening the region’s energy autonomy and increasing the resilience of the island’s electricity system.
The benefits of this energy transition are also reflected in environmental and economic terms. In the first three months of the year, the high uptake of renewable energy helped avoid significant costs associated with the purchase of fossil fuels and substantially reduced carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere. These results underscore the importance of continued investment in sustainable energy sources, contributing to the mitigation of climate change and the building of a greener future for Madeira.
