Protected Areas of the Autonomous Region of Madeira: The “Desertas” Islands and “Selvagens” Islands
The policies of conservation and sustainable development of the natural areas of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, define the sustainable use of the natural resources as a key element, in order to guarantee the protection of its enormous biological diversity, the environmental quality and the social development. An example of this is the “Desertas” Islands Natural Reserve, which requires authorization from the Institute of Forests and Natural Conservation (IFCN) to be visited, in order to conserve and protect its natural heritage.
The “Selvagens” Islands are also part of the Natura 2000 Network, as an Special Conservation Area (SAC), whose areas are coincident with the Natural Reserve area, and as a Special Protection Area (SPA).
