Madeira Embroidery in Berlin with a Focus on Sustainability
Between 24 and 26 July, Berlin hosted an initiative promoting Madeira Embroidery, organised by IVBAM and the brand Bailha, in partnership with the international platform White Label Project. The event featured a pop-up shop at the WLP Store in the creative district of Mitte, where items such as shirts, t-shirts, and tote bags from Bailha were presented, all produced in organic cotton and sustainable materials, reflecting the brand’s environmental commitment.
Visitors were invited to take part in a workshop with embroiderer Dorina Silva, where they had the opportunity to embroider their own tote bag, raising awareness of the importance of valuing artisanal, low-impact production such as Madeira Embroidery. In addition, an exhibition of pieces from IVBAM’s collection was held, demonstrating the versatility of Madeira Embroidery, which can be applied to bed and bath linens as well as decorative items. This approach promotes conscious consumption of durable, high-quality products in contrast to disposable fashion.
The initiative highlighted how tradition and innovation can coexist sustainably, combining contemporary design with responsible artisanal practices. Founded in 2021 by David Oliveira, the Bailha project has stood out for protecting and reinventing the tradition of Madeira Embroidery, placing artisans, sustainability, and the power of their stories at the heart of its mission.
Alongside the exhibition, a Madeira Wine tasting was held, further reinforcing the connection between culture, local products, and sustainability by valuing regional, low-impact production practices.
