Madeira is stepping up its commitment to the sustainability of the destination

The Regional Secretariat for Tourism, Environment and Culture of Madeira is organising a series of strategic meetings between 9 and 11 March 2026 to drive forward the process of certifying the region as a sustainable tourist destination by EarthCheck. The short-term objective is to achieve Level IV Silver certification later this year, serving as a foundation for the goal of achieving the gold seal in 2027.

The meetings, taking place in Funchal, will involve the participation of the “Green Teams”, which are monitoring around 300 actions set out in the 2022–2030 Action Plan. These initiatives assess key criteria such as the size of protected areas, landfill waste management and the quality of bathing waters, preparing the destination for the annual renewal audits.

Regional Secretary Eduardo Jesus emphasizes that sustainability is not merely an administrative objective, but a commitment with a real and positive impact on the community and the environment. The strategy aims to transform the destination in a visible and transparent manner, ensuring that the tourist experience is balanced with the preservation of the natural resources of Madeira and Porto Santo.
