Symbolic blackout in Madeira to protect Madeira petrel juveniles
SPEA-BirdLife, in partnership with the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN), held a symbolic blackout in Madeira on September 27 to help protect juvenile Madeira petrels (Pterodroma madeira) during their first flights between the mountainous areas where they are born and the sea.
The initiative is part of the LIFE Freiras project. Between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m., the public is invited to turn off outdoor lighting at homes and businesses, reducing light pollution in areas that may be part of the birds’ flight corridors, between Câmara de Lobos and Funchal, and between Santana and Machico.
