Maritime-tourism companies called to collect sea trash

The Regional Directorate for Environment and the Sea (DRAM), in an initiative integrated into the European project CIRCULAROCEAN, focused on improving marine litter management and promoting the circular economy, invited maritime-tourism companies in Madeira to voluntarily participate in collecting waste found in the sea during their activities.

This action, aimed to imply maritime-tourism companies in ocean protection, reducing marine pollution, and turning waste into resources for more sustainable tourism in Madeira, involved installing specific containers at the marinas of Funchal, Calheta, and Quinta do Lorde, helping facilitate the delivery of collected waste.

The delivered waste will be recorded and classified, allowing for monitoring the initiative’s results. At the end of 2026, participating companies may receive the “Compliant Vessel Flag” distinction, as recognition of their commitment to protecting the sea.

The project involves several regional entities and also includes awareness campaigns, the purchase of equipment to collect abandoned fishing gear, and the development of solutions to make use of the collected materials.
