The Sousa Group is investing more than 18 million euros in the decarbonisation of seven ships

The Sousa Group is to invest more than 18 million euros in decarbonising its entire fleet by modernising seven vessels, as part of the ‘Eco-Shipping’ programme, funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP). The initiative involves adopting solutions such as the use of biofuels, the digitalisation and automation of vessels, as well as connection to the onshore power supply whilst in port, contributing to more sustainable maritime operations.

Among the expected impacts is a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions; it is estimated that the electrification of the Lobo Marinho alone will prevent around 3,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year. The investment reinforces the Sousa Group’s commitment to the energy transition in maritime transport and to adopting solutions in line with national and European decarbonisation targets.

The project was presented during the 2nd Madeira Maritime Week, where the Sousa Group emphasised that, despite the uncertainty surrounding the future of marine fuels, it will continue to invest in the modernisation of its fleet, prioritising measures that promote energy efficiency and reduce the carbon footprint of maritime transport in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
